Tonido was the personal-cloud answer
Tonido targeted the home-server lane: install software where the files already lived, expose them remotely, and keep storage personal. Its official sunset page says the project ran from 2008 to 2022, that web access continues only on LAN, and that the recommended path forward is FileCloud Community Edition with port forwarding.
- Good fit historically: personal files, home machines, simple remote access.
- Bad fit now: the product is sunset, so it is not a fresh platform choice.
- The successor lane is FileCloud, which is enterprise file sharing and sync.
ownCloud is the workspace and enterprise-sync answer
ownCloud today is not trying to be Tonido. The current product line centers on Infinite Scale, ownCloud 10, web office integrations, Spaces, on-premises deployment, compliance, public links, and organization-wide collaboration.
- Good fit: regulated organizations, enterprise identity, governance, web office, and established sync clients.
- Tradeoff: more platform surface when all you wanted was fast private file storage.
- Decision point: if Office collaboration and enterprise process are the reason to buy, ownCloud has the clearer lane.
Cotton fits the gap between them
Cotton is the answer when the Tonido instinct is right - own your files and run the cloud yourself - but the product needs to be modern. It is open-source self-hosted cloud storage with content-addressed chunks, streaming encryption, previews, shares, snapshots, WebDAV, Android, and Windows/Linux sync clients.
- Use Cotton when the main job is files, not calendar, contacts, chat, or a plugin marketplace.
- Use Cotton when browser previews, large uploads, snapshots, WebDAV, and storage recovery should feel like one product.
- Use Cotton when you want a Docker/Postgres deployment instead of either a sunset personal cloud or a broad enterprise workspace.
The honest short version
Pick Tonido only as a historical reference or for an existing LAN-only setup you already understand. Pick ownCloud when you need an enterprise collaboration platform. Pick Cotton when you searched for Tonido vs ownCloud because you really wanted a modern, open-source, self-hosted cloud storage product for serious files.
